Dear Brian Jones:

As a tenant of your apartment for four years, I want to begin by saying that this is not a letter of complaint. I am fortunate to be very happy in your apartment complex, but recent circumstances have made it difficult for me to remain here.

I am requesting a reduction in my rent. My circumstances are this: [Write your special circumstances here, but keep it short, maybe 2 sentences.] I have just lost my job, because of company cutbacks. I have lived in this apartment for four years, very happy to pay the rent because it is a terrific location for me; however my roommate has moved out, which now places quite a burden on me.

[Now offer your suggestion, and show your willingness to find compromises.] One solution is if my rent were $200 less, then I could use a Section 8 voucher. Alternatively, I might be able to do some job for you in exchange for rent. I would appreciate any suggestion. [Don't expect it go on forever.] If I can lower my outlay for rent for just six months, then I will have found a new job and/or roommate, and I will have caught up on my expenses.

[You can skip this next paragraph, as it makes the letter a little long, or use it to explain further if you have lots to say.] You may be thinking that I should simply move to a cheaper apartment. I have looked, but cannot find anything nearby that is less expensive. Also, having been here for so long, I have an established support system. The shopping mall, the community college, and my doctor's office are nearby. Finally, cheaper apartments are in worse neighborhoods. One of the things I most like about living here is that I am in a safe community.

Thank you for taking time to consider my special request.

Sincerely,

Linda Smart
